Waterloo Region bin cleaning guide
The black garbage cart, green organics cart, and blue boxes do different jobs, but they share one rule: clean them only after collection, when they are empty and safe to wash.

What changed at the curb in 2026
Waterloo Region’s 2026 curbside system uses a black wheeled cart for garbage and a green wheeled cart for organics. Blue-box recycling continues under Circular Materials. Your exact collection dates depend on your address, so use the official schedule rather than assuming every cart goes out together.
The cart lid keeps material contained, but it can also keep residue and odour enclosed between collections. Bags reduce the mess; they do not guarantee that the inside stays clean.
No magic calendar
Clean when the bin gives you a reason
There is no single cleaning frequency that every household needs. Check the cart after it is emptied and respond to what you can see and smell.
Residue at the bottom
A tied bag can still leak. Food liquid and grime collect in the lowest corners after the cart is emptied.
Odour under the lid
A closed cart holds onto smells, especially when residue has dried onto the inside walls or lid.
Flies or larvae
Visible insect activity is a practical sign that organic material remains and the cart needs attention.
Sticky handles and edges
The places touched most often are easy to miss when the cart only gets a quick rinse.

How to wash an empty cart at home

Wait until after collection
Start only when the cart is completely empty. Remove nothing by hand that is sharp, hazardous, or unsafe to handle.

Choose a safe wash area
Work on a stable surface with room around the cart. Keep children and pets clear, and do not direct dirty wash water into a storm drain.

Protect yourself
Wear gloves and eye protection. Follow the label on every cleaning product and never mix products together.

Rinse, wash, and scrub
Loosen residue with water, wash the inside, outside, lid, and handles, and use a long-handled brush where grime remains.

Rinse and drain
Remove the cleaning product and tip the cart only as far as you can safely control it. Never climb or lean inside.

Let it dry open
Leave the lid open in a secure place until the cart is dry. Drying helps keep the fresh wash from immediately turning damp and stale.
When you would rather skip it
What Bin Heroes does during a visit
Bin Heroes pressure washes accessible surfaces inside and outside, cleans under the lid and around the handles, scrubs where needed, and deodorizes the selected bins with biodegradable cleaning products.
You leave each selected bin completely empty in a clear, accessible spot and provide a working outdoor tap the crew can fill from. You do not need to be home. The crew confirms the appointment before the visit and returns the bins to the agreed location.
From May 31 to September 30 the Region’s Water Conservation By-law schedules outdoor water use by house number and time of day. The by-law does not list cart washing among the activities it covers. Washing a car is the closest thing it does list, so that is the standard Bin Heroes holds itself to. Through those months the crew fills buckets from your tap and runs the pressure washer off those, so a cleaning is not tied to your watering day.
